Understanding Assignments

Before you start writing your assignment, it is essential for you to be aware of your professor's expectations. The following is a list of questions which you can ask your professor or yourself about. Be prepared to answer to these questions prior to coming to the International Writing Center.

  • Who is your audience? (In this case, probably your professor.)

  • Which subject/class is this assignment for?

  • What kind of assignment is this (e.g., lab report, annotated bibliography, take-home essay exam, research paper)?

  • How long should this paper be (What is the length of this paper)?
  • Does your professor specify the headings/sections s/he wants you to include in the paper?
  • What are the key words you would use in your paper? Can you define them?

It is always a good idea to ask your professor about a well-known journal in your field. Try to go to the library and examine the format of the journal article. By training yourself to notice the details of the writing style, you are on the way of becoming an independent writer!
